Nigel Willoby, lvl 10 Chaotic Neutral Bard/Wizard

I'm Back Home 5

So I've been bitten by the D&D bug lately. I started DMing (Dungeon Mastering) 3.5 edition D&D for a group of beginner players (or in the case of Valentine, noob-D&D-players). So we're basically all learning about the game, since I'm not too familiar with it either. To correct that, I started to revert an old character of mine into D&D setting/rules, namely Nigel Willoby the otaku-hacker.

Why? Because it made me go through masses of rules meant for spellcasting characters. Nigel has always been a magical character, literally. Myself have never played as a spellcaster, I always have a melee fighter of some sorts, be it in RPG or a video game. So it was a new challenge. I needed to learn about known spells, learnt spells, spell slots, spell schools/domains, spellcasting variants, metamagic, magical items etc. And since I created Nigel as a LVL 10 character, I also needed to go through lvl-advancement rules, skills and feats. I did a lot of reading.

But now he's done! And I'm so very happy with him :D (Too bad I don't really get to play as him, but it was fun nonetheless just to put him on paper).

So here he is, with commentary:

Nigel Willow, lvl 10; Bard lvl 3 + Wizard lvl 7   Nigel starts out as an information gatherer, like he is a Seeker in Cheshka. He quickly delves into magic and becomes a potent elemental spellcaster.

STR 9; DEX 12; CON 10; INT 18; WIS 12; CHA 14 Nigel's main attribute is his Intelligence, hence the choice of wizardry over sorcery. I also added his extra attributes from lvl-ups to INT. He also has a high Charisma, as he has always been portrayed as very good-looking.

Main Skills:

Concentration +13; Decipher Script +17; Forgery +10; Gather Information +15; Knowledge (arcana) +11; Knowledge (history) +11; Knowledge (Bardic) +9; Sense Motive +11; Spellcraft +19; Use Magic Device +19

Nigel is a know-it-all and what he doesn't yet know, he knows where to find. He is also adept at magical things. Since he was a hacker, I also bought ranks in Forgery, which is the only cross-class skill I bought ranks for.

Feats:

Deceitful, Eschew materials, Quicken Spell, Soul of the North, Spell Mastery, Jack of all trades

If he must, Nigel only relies on his spellbook R.E.I for spells, hence ditching the spell components. He even had learned a few spells by heart.

Equipment:

Staff of Lightning: a darkwood staff, had 50 charges of Lightning Bolt / Orb of Electricity

It took me ages to figure this one out... I needed to really check the cost of custom staves, since nothing ready-made in the books quite fit both the character and his wallet. This staff took 14 500 gp to make, with its two spells and being only half the weight of a normal staff and a masterwork weapon.

Rod of lesser Maximize metamagic, Wand of cure moderate wounds (50), Wonderous figure of Ebony Fly, Ring of Protection +1, Cloak of Resistance +1, Bag of Holding for his miscallaneous stuff

You can so see this, right? Nigel, riding on his summoned black hippogriff (of course named Wolfie), casting maximized lightning bolts and fireballs! :D And then I needed something to keep him alive, since he only relies on magic for AC.

Spells:

Domain Wizard: Storm Domain

Since his main repertoire of attacking spells come from his staff, he can prepare some buffing spells in stead. Mage armor, Shield and Protetion from energy were a must. He had Cold grasp in his back pocket for  quick draw and Greater invisibility for those tight spots ;) His Bard spells focus on identify and curing.

Kommentit

  1. Nikki came out really cool! :D I will wait with fear when he suddenly jumps behind the corner as npc and fries us all. xDDDD And I'm sure that was pretty entertaining to do. I have to say, I'm after alittle reading quite ready to buy own Players handbookto myself. <.<;

  2. Well, he's recognizably Nigel, and you've sure spent quite the effort on him. :) I sympathize. That said, I've a couple of comments. :P

I'm a bit surprised you went with the damage dealing route. A bard/wizard combo would be a killer with spells and specialties oriented towards information gathering and social talents. I would - with what I know of Vainary - have made him a Divination or Conjuration specialist. That, coupled with Bard spells and a decent CHA modifier, would have made him really good at gathering information. The staff is a nice touch, but precisely because of it he could've focused on less damage dealing spells. Similarly, Extend or Stilled Spell, either as a rod or as a feat, would buff information gathering / domination type spells more than quicken/maximize.

Domain Wizards are pretty unbalanced, like most of UA. They get extra without having to give anything away. Were I DM:ing, I'd probably veto most of UA, but of course that's always dependent on the campaign setting, and anyway your call.

I really like Forgery as a skill choice, it's so Nigel. :) Why'd you max UMD, though? He's a wizard, he doesn't need to make UMD checks to use most arcane items (arcane wands, scrolls, etc.). Sure, with UMD Nigel can try to use divine scrolls and alignment restricted effects (that don't automatically hurt users of wrong alignment), but I'm not sure it's worth all the ranks.

Soul of the North is pretty weak, you get the spells as a first level caster, which pales in comparison to Nigel's Caster Level 7 for other wizard spells. It makes sense as an emergency back-up, but wouldn't a feat which increases Nigel's spell selection work better? Something like Extra Slot?

In the end, he's your character, I'm just shouting from the sidelines (and avoiding working on my Master's Thesis).

  3. I don’t think that I’ll bring Nikki as an NPC to Pirates campaign. Not unless it’s really, really tempting. The lot of you would just kill him u_u

And yeah, a real printed PHB+DMG+MM is also on my wish list, but until I’m sure that we keep on playing, I’m going to hold out on that purchase. It’d be a waste of money for just a few games… And I’ve got a couple of birthdays coming up and this might solve my dilemma on what to get for these boys… ;)

  4. Because I wanted to? I wasn't maxing Nigel out. I have no need for that, especially in this case, where I'm trying to replicate a character based on previous 'incarnations'. So I just chose the skills/feats/spells that seemed to best fit the character I had in mind. It's not like all my character choices are always about munchking out...

Most of my decisions here are based on Cheshka!Nigel, a logical choice since that one is a fantasy setting variation of this character. Yes, the first Nigel, Torchwood!Nigel, was purely an information gatherer. But in the DeathGrip!Nigel version magic was introduced into his repertoire. I know that you don't know much about the Cheshka ver. Nigel, but he is even more an elementalist that his hacker counterparts. Hence the loads of ammunition. The magic I've mostly made Nigel use (in games or in the book) are actually the lightning bolt and invisibility. He has his share of Identifies from his Bard spell list, so the Wizard list is more on the offensive.

And Nigel, dominating? Who? He's never had an affinity for it...

The domain wizardry does give the domain spells for free (both in learning them and as a spell slot), but thenagain, you can't get rid of them. So it only pays off to take the domain, if the whole spell list of that domain suits you. If I had chosen the Evocation specialist, which I first was going to do, I'd have a more versatile choice of the extra spells, but I would have had to give up versatility on the whole. And in the end, Nigel is the type of wizard who wants a wide repertoire of spells, not shunning even the necromancy. But, lucky for me, you're not DM'ing here, no?

  5. Yeah, sure, of course making the character personable and original is more important than the mechanics. And I didn't assume you wanted to minmax Vainary, nor did I indicate anything other than it's entirely your call what you do with your write-up. Commentary does not imply authority, after all.

However, since you posted the (abbreviated) character sheet on your blog, it's reasonable to assume you wanted comments on it. And since you focused on the choices you made vis-à-vis game mechanics, and highlighted you were exploring the different facets of the system, it's not that surprising that it'd attract commentary of that nature. Especially considering that a) D&D is a very mechanics-driven system, b) you are a player with a very good grasp of the mechanics, and c) we've recently played D&D together.

You're absolutely right, I can only comment on the Nigel I know from the games I've played in. That's pretty much given. There's not much I can say about stuff I have no information on. If I only commented on something I had complete knowledge of, well, that would preclude commenting on anything.

What comes to domain wizardry, we'll just have to disagree on whether it limits the character or not.

  6. True, I always welcome comments. It's a public blog. However, your post came out at least to me like I was minmaxing Nigel, and failing at it. I was trying out the mechanics, and Nigel here is made according to the rules and game mechanics of D&D.

Well just keep on disagreeing. On that, we can agree.
