Photoshoppin' [How to: twocolored images]

Did some experimenting on Photoshop today since I need something green/pink on our wall and can't draw/paint anything. So a picture of Éire was our test subject. And so I'll remeber what the heck I did, here's a tutorial!

Here's the original image, do NOT use without permission!

Blaze

Open an image on Photoshop. Duplicate your base image and desaturate it (Image > Adjustments > Desaturate or Shift+Ctrl+U), then duplicate the grayscale copy. You'll end up with two grayscale versions of you picture in addition of your base picture (that we'll keep just in case you want to start over). Click on the topmost copy and invert it (Image > Adjustments > Invert or Ctrl+I). You'll end up with this:

Make a Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer (right-click on the bottom row fourth icon from the left, the one that looks like a half moon). Check the colorize box, then adjust the hue, saturation and lightness meters to your liking. I'd suggest turning the lightness down since the hightlights are quite probably blown. Also note that any dark areas (especially black) are going to be of the other tone we'll adjust later. So just get those light areas to be the color you like. When you're satisfied, merge the adjustment layer down. Here's what did with hue/saturation and what I have so far:

Change the blending of this colored layer to screen. Then select your Background copy (the still grayscale copy of the original) and add a new Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer. It should be in between of your two copies in your layers menu. Check colorize and ajust the color to your liking.

Well, the image is a bit bland and light, so if you want to darken it a bit, make a Levels Adjustment layer on top of them all. Adjust the center gray tab to your liking (to make it darker, drag it to the right). and I ended up with this:

The end result:

With slightly different setting of the Hue/Saturation layers I also got this:

So don't be scared of tweaking your original (then merged) Hue/Saturation layer if you aren't happy with the first result. In an image that was originally full of shadows I actually ended up doing this the other way around to get the result I wanted. In that picture I put the inverted copy beneath the  grayscale copy which I blended with Multiply. In that picture I ended up giving the picture more light with dragging the middle level to the left instead of right.
